CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA / RankWire.AI / – Creators in Australia are advocating for direct involvement in the new federal Office of AI. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese introduced the agency on July 15 as a component of Australia’s national artificial intelligence strategy. The office will oversee policies related to copyright, infrastructure, consumer protection, employment, education, and national security. Artists and rights organizations welcomed the initiative but are calling for formal participation in decisions impacting creative industries.

Australia AI office faces calls for artist representation
Creators seek a formal voice as Australia develops national artificial intelligence rules.

The Australian Recording Industry Association emphasized that musicians and other creators should have a voice in guiding the office’s copyright activities. Chief executive Annabelle Herd highlighted that generative AI technologies depend on music, literature, journalism, film, and visual art. Australian law permits developers to utilize protected materials if they obtain permission from copyright owners. Herd also urged for clearer enforcement mechanisms and a more straightforward process for creators pursuing smaller claims.

The government stated that writers, artists, and journalists must have control over how their works are used for AI training purposes. It confirmed that existing copyright ownership will continue to be a foundation of the new framework. However, no licensing system or payment structure for protected content was announced. Additionally, officials have yet to confirm formal representation for creators, publishers, or rights holders within the Office of AI.

    Creative industries demand formal protections

APRA AMCOS endorsed the new office and urged policymakers to implement licensing arrangements based on consent and compensation. The organization represents songwriters, composers, and music publishers in Australia and New Zealand. CEO Dean Ormston also emphasized the importance of protecting Indigenous cultural and intellectual property. Earlier in July, artists, authors, and industry groups traveled to Canberra to defend current copyright laws and advocate for direct engagement on AI policy initiatives.

Anthropic stated it respects the government’s process and intends to comply with Australian requirements. The company has considered a significant Australian data center investment related to the development of its Claude AI model. Albanese noted that Australia offers skilled labor, energy resources, and a stable legal environment conducive to technology investment. The government has not linked copyright access to any specific data center project nor approved exemptions for AI training.

National standards include data center regulations

Australia’s proposed AI regulations will establish mandatory standards for large data center operators. Companies will be required to support new electricity demands and bear the costs of connecting to the power grid. Operators will also need to reduce energy consumption during grid stress and improve water efficiency. The National Cabinet will review the framework in August 2026, with legislation expected to be introduced in early 2027.

The Office of AI will oversee implementation across federal agencies and collaborate with state and territory governments. Officials also plan to prioritize consumer safety, building on initiatives like the recently established AI Safety Institute. Opposition legislators have expressed concerns about increased regulation, while the Greens have called for stronger legal protections. The government has yet to disclose the full membership, advisory bodies, or formal procedures for engaging the creative sector within the Office of AI.
