GUATEMALA / RankWire.AI / – In three departments, Guatemala has elevated its warning level to the maximum as Fuego volcano emitted ash, lava, and perilous pyroclastic flows. The authorities issued a red alert for Chimaltenango, Sacatepéquez, and Escuintla, while a nationwide orange alert remained active throughout the emergency. Officials reported that ashfall impacted approximately 29,000 individuals across 18 communities, with rescue teams continuing evacuations near exposed ravines and settlements.

Fuego volcano eruption puts Guatemala regions on red alert
Evacuations continue near Fuego volcano as ashfall reaches several departments.

The eruption grew more intense on Monday, with columns of gas and ash rising high above the crater. Pyroclastic flows descended down five ravines on the volcano’s western and southwestern slopes, with some traveling distances between five and seven kilometers from the crater. These swift-moving currents contain extremely hot gases, volcanic rocks, and ash. Monitoring teams also tracked an ash cloud that spread west and northwest across several areas in Guatemala.

Initially, authorities evacuated residents from El Porvenir and Las Lajitas within the San Juan Alotenango municipality. Around 250 residents from roughly 50 families were moved during this first operation. As the situation persisted, shelter capacity increased to accommodate more evacuees fleeing communities threatened by ashfall and volcanic dangers. Five shelters currently house approximately 1,699 people, with three additional locations being prepared. At these sites, families affected by the evacuation receive meals, medical attention, security, and essential supplies.

Relief efforts broaden in response to Fuego’s activity

Guatemala’s disaster management agency, CONRED, coordinated local evacuations and aid efforts in the affected regions. Residents were advised to steer clear of ravines and adhere to instructions issued by emergency personnel. They were also encouraged to safeguard stored food and water from ash fallout. Guidance was provided to residents in exposed communities to wear masks or damp cloths over their faces. Response teams remained on site to monitor evolving conditions and support local authorities.

INSIVUMEH, the national volcano and weather institute, used field observers, sensors, cameras, and satellite imagery to track volcanic activity. Pyroclastic flows were documented in the Seca, Taniluyá, Ceniza, Las Lajas, and Honda ravines. Continuous emissions of gas, lava, and ash kept seismic activity high during the eruptive phase. Ash clouds extended across Sololá, Quetzaltenango, Suchitepéquez, Retalhuleu, and San Marcos, reaching beyond the three departments under the red alert.

    Transportation disruptions accompany volcanic crisis

The authorities shut down National Route 14, a crucial highway near Fuego volcano. The Education Ministry also suspended classes in nearby communities as ash fall and emergency operations disrupted daily routines. Road crews monitored access points and changing conditions around the volcano. La Aurora International Airport continued functioning with volcanic ash procedures in place. Security personnel patrolled evacuated neighborhoods to safeguard property and assist residents who had left their homes.

Rainfall posed an additional risk since water mixing with loose ash, rocks, and volcanic debris can generate lahars that move swiftly through river channels and ravines. No structural damages have been reported in the affected communities during the latest updates, and mudflows have not reached populated areas. Fuego is approximately 30 kilometers south of Guatemala City and is recognized as one of the most active volcanoes in Central America.
