    Alaska’s Atka region experiences a 5.0 magnitude quake with no reported damage

    ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – Late Saturday, southeastern Alaska’s Aleutian Islands were shaken by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. The Alaska Earthquake Center documented the event at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, which was 03:36 UTC on August 9. The quake’s epicenter was approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka. Seismologists estimated its depth at about 10.6 miles, or 17 kilometers.

    Magnitude 5.0 earthquake shakes Alaska near Atka
    Alaska’s Aleutian Islands remain a highly active region for earthquake monitoring.

    The quake took place at coordinates 51.8286 degrees north latitude and 173.2496 degrees west longitude. According to scientists, it registered a magnitude of 5.0 on the local magnitude scale. The remote community of Atka is situated on Atka Island, part of the central Aleutian chain, located hundreds of miles away from Alaska’s largest urban centers. Frequent seismic activity in this region stems from multiple active geological structures beneath the North Pacific.

    The earthquake’s epicenter was also located southwest of Seguam Island and Amukta Pass. Mount Sergief lies to the west of the event’s recorded location, with surrounding islands and volcanic features forming part of the broader seismic zone. This event happened at a relatively shallow depth for an Aleutian earthquake, contrasting with many deeper tremors caused by the Pacific Plate’s subduction beneath the region. Seismologists rely on measurements of location, depth, and magnitude to differentiate these various seismic phenomena.

    The Aleutian chain sees frequent seismic activity

    The Aleutian Arc ranks among the most seismically active zones in Alaska, driven by the Pacific Plate sliding beneath the North American Plate along this extensive boundary—a process known as subduction. This tectonic activity results in earthquakes of diverse depths and strengths. Extending for thousands of kilometers across the North Pacific, this geological setting causes Alaska to experience thousands of earthquakes annually, many of which originate beneath or near the Aleutian Islands.

    This region has also been the site of some of Alaska’s most powerful earthquakes, including a magnitude 8.6 event that struck the Andreanof Islands in 1957, and a magnitude 8.7 quake impacting the Rat Islands in 1965. Additionally, significant tremors occurred in 1986 and 1996 along the same broad plate boundary. These seismic events vary in their exact locations and depths but are all part of the complex tectonic activity shaping Alaska’s seismic landscape.

    Seismological networks monitor activity throughout the state

    Seismic activity in the Aleutians can originate from multiple segments of the regional tectonic system. Some quakes occur along the primary boundary between the Pacific and North American plates, while others develop deeper within the Pacific Plate as it descends beneath Alaska. Shallow earthquakes can also happen within the overriding crust. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains a comprehensive record of earthquakes nationwide, providing reviewed data on seismic events across Alaska and the entire United States.

    The magnitude 5.0 quake on August 8 adds to Alaska’s extensive seismic database. Its location southeast of Atka places it within a well-known zone of regular seismic activity. The depth measurement of 17 kilometers classifies it as a shallow earthquake by regional standards. Monitoring stations across Alaska continuously detect ground motion signals from remote islands and mainland locations, enabling scientists to refine earthquake locations, magnitudes, and depths across the state based on these data.
