Michigan Reports First Fatalities Linked to Cyclospora Outbreak in 2026

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – Confirmed by Michigan health officials are two deaths related to the state’s 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services indicated there were 11,234 cases by Aug. 3, with 193 hospitalizations documented through July 30. Both individuals had significant pre-existing health issues. Authorities stated that cyclosporiasis and dehydration may have contributed to their conditions but did not disclose any additional personal details.

Michigan reports first deaths tied to cyclospora outbreak
Health officials track 11,234 Michigan cyclospora cases and 193 hospitalizations.

The development of symptoms in these two patients occurred prior to the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledged the deaths in an update released on Aug. 3, noting both as fatalities involving people with underlying health problems related to cyclosporiasis. Discrepancies exist between state and federal totals because of differing reporting methods; Michigan’s count includes all recorded cases during its investigation, whereas federal figures typically focus on lab-confirmed infections.

A separate investigation by federal authorities continues into a nine-state outbreak associated with iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, officials identified 1,947 cases linked to exposure at Taco Bell, with at least 98 patients hospitalized. The illnesses reported occurred between June 22 and July 20. Initially, the detailed federal tally did not include Michigan’s two deaths, which authorities confirmed after that update.

Market recall leads to removal of iceberg lettuce

Iceberg lettuce originating from central Mexico was withdrawn from the U.S. market by Taylor Farms de Mexico. The recall encompassed various food-service items and certain Marketside lettuce products sold through Walmart stores. Retail products affected included iceberg salad and shredded iceberg lettuce with expiration dates from July 18 to Aug. 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods distributed the recalled lettuce to 27 states, with Taco Bell discontinuing use of the supplier’s lettuce on July 17.

Not every case reported in Michigan has been linked to the recalled lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services still considers lettuce or salad greens as potential sources. Investigators have yet to identify a single product, farm, or supplier responsible for the entire outbreak across the state. Additionally, the two deaths have not been connected to any specific recalled item. Federal officials note that the current iceberg lettuce cluster accounts for only part of the nationwide cyclosporiasis activity under investigation.

Cyclosporiasis can persist for several weeks

The microscopic parasite Cyclospora causes an intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis. Typically acquired through consuming contaminated food or water, symptoms include frequent watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, bloating, and fatigue. Usually, symptoms develop about one week after exposure, though timing may vary. Without appropriate treatment, the illness can last over a month and may recur after a period of improvement.

Health authorities recommend discarding recalled iceberg lettuce or returning it to the point of purchase. Consumers should also thoroughly wash containers and surfaces that came into contact with the product. Anyone experiencing symptoms is advised to seek medical attention, especially if they recently consumed iceberg lettuce. Older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions are at higher risk of dehydration. Michigan health officials continue updating case counts as local and state investigators review new reports.
