SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is expanding access to ChatGPT by offering Free and Go users unlimited text interactions with GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that this update will start next week and will be implemented with safeguards to prevent misuse. During the current rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna also becomes the default model for those accounts. Additionally, Free users will see a Think button that enables the system to dedicate more time to complex questions before providing a response.

This new level of access applies exclusively to text conversations and does not eliminate all usage restrictions across ChatGPT. OpenAI clarified that limits will still apply to file uploads, image generation, and other tools that demand extra processing. The Think feature will accompany unlimited messaging starting next week, offering GPT-5.6 Luna additional reasoning capacity for tasks requiring deeper analysis. The company continues to enforce separate controls on features beyond standard chat, including tools available under different usage allowances.

GPT-5.6 has been introduced as a family of models that includes Luna, Sol, and Terra, with Luna positioned as the faster, more affordable option within the lineup. OpenAI stated that ChatGPT now reaches approximately one billion weekly users across activities such as searches, research, planning, writing, and other tasks. As part of the latest update, users on Free and Go plans will have Luna as their primary ChatGPT model. This rollout broadens access to the core chat service while maintaining specific tool restrictions.

Paid plans benefit from an upgraded reasoning model

Subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Pro are also gaining access to an improved version of GPT-5.6 Sol for daily use. Sol supports both quick replies and more in-depth reasoning within the paid tier. OpenAI mentioned that this update offers more targeted answers and minimizes unnecessary details when a simpler response suffices. Paid users will also have a reasoning slider available on web, mobile, and desktop platforms. This feature enables users to determine how much processing ChatGPT applies to tasks such as research, planning, coding, and writing.

The company also shared that internal evaluations of its latest models showed a decrease in factual inaccuracies. These tests, which focused on financial, medical, and legal prompts requiring detailed factual responses, indicated that answers with at least one factual error dropped by about 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, the reduction was approximately 68%. Additionally, OpenAI stated that Sol improved its handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when these details were critical to an answer.

Unlimited messaging still adheres to separate safety protocols

OpenAI emphasized that its latest ChatGPT models incorporate extra safeguards for users under 18. These protections aim to prevent romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that might substitute for real-world relationships. They also include boundaries related to sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted items, and graphic violence. The company added new evaluations for responses involving younger users. The unlimited text conversations will continue to operate within the same safeguards when the expanded access is available to Free and Go accounts.

This update focuses primarily on the core ChatGPT experience, rather than all OpenAI products utilizing GPT-5.6 models. OpenAI clarified that GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex will remain unchanged with this release. Paid users can access the updated Sol model and reasoning controls immediately. Free and Go users will see Luna as their default model this week, with unlimited text chats and the Think button following next week, while separate limits for images, uploads, and other tools stay in place.
