MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s electricity generation saw a 4.3% year-on-year increase during the first eight months of 2026, reaching a total of 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours compared to 35,935.3 GWh in the same period of 2025. The rise amounted to approximately 1,546.5 GWh. Preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated gains across several governorates. In August, production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July, maintaining a level above that of 2025.

Muscat saw the most significant increase in overall electricity output, with a rise of 204.8% from the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah experienced growth of 44.1%, while Al Wusta increased by 8.4%. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah each grew by 5.5%. Dhofar reported a 4.6% rise over the same period. The data revealed regional disparities in electricity growth, with many governorates recording higher outputs during this reporting interval.

During the first eight months, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah showed a different trend, with combined electricity production decreasing by 16.4% compared to the same period in 2025. Musandam produced 376.0 GWh, with no significant change from a year earlier. Overall, the regional figures indicated increases in most areas included in the national data. Oman’s total electricity output remained elevated through the end of August, covering the period from January to August 2026.

    Electricity generation expands across Oman

Net electricity production also saw growth during the January to August timeframe, climbing 4.6% to 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh the previous year. This measure accounts for purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the net production increase with a jump of 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah grew by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar added 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. The overall national increase was roughly 1,592.1 GWh.

A combined 5.4% rise in net electricity was observed in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah. Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6% in net output. Musandam produced 368.0 GWh, with a reported annual change rate of 0.0%. Despite regional variations, national net electricity output remained higher than the levels seen in 2025. The regional trends largely mirrored the movements in total electricity production, with several governorates recording increases during this period.

Water output drops through August 2026

Water production in Oman declined over the same eight-month span, decreasing 3.5% to 330.65 million cubic metres from approximately 342.71 million in the previous year. Muscat’s water output fell 6.2% to around 128.07 million cubic metres, compared with about 136.57 million cubic metres during the same period of 2025. Other governorates experienced a 3.4% decrease, producing roughly 149.90 million cubic metres, down from about 155.19 million cubic metres a year earlier.

Dhofar bucked the national trend with an increase in water production, reaching approximately 52.68 million cubic metres, up 3.4% from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest figures show electricity and water moving in opposite directions across Oman through August 2026. While electricity output increased on both total and net levels, water production overall declined despite Dhofar’s growth. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies these figures as preliminary.
